Rattan skin peel is a material made by splitting and sawing glossy rattan (round rattan) and adjusting only the bark to a uniform width and thickness.

It is characterized by the natural patterns and luster that are unique to rattan skin peel, and is used to make a variety of tools, including Japanese musical instruments such as the shinobue (bamboo flute), shakuhachi (shakuhachi flute), and hichiriki (Japanese flute), fishing rods for crucian carp, kyudo (Japanese archery) equipment such as bows, quivers, and string winders, and Japanese swords.

Because it is machine milled, it is thin and easy to knit.
